Steps

  1. Search name or manager

    On the entity search, business name is the default path. Manager is useful when you know a person and not the LLC’s full name. Partial word helps with a distinctive stem and hurts with a common one.

  2. Open the file detail report

    Confirm the record says limited liability company. An illinois llc search that lands on a corporation with a similar name will send you to the wrong annual-report form. Check the file number against any receipt you already have.

  3. Read good standing from the report, then decide if you need the certificate

    The department says a certificate of good standing confirms compliance with Business Services and can be purchased from the report: $25 for an LLC. Print it from the receipt page or the email. Do not describe a screen view as the certificate.

  4. Note the anniversary month

What the LLC page says you can do

The Secretary of State’s LLC section lists search, annual report, articles, assumed name, certificate of good standing, name change, agent change, and reinstatement as separate tasks. A lookup does not complete any of those filings. Each one has a form or an online path, and expedited service, when it is offered, is in person at Springfield or Chicago rather than by mail.

Common mistakes

  • Searching a series name or a product brand that was never the legal name.
  • Paying a reseller for a file detail report you can open yourself.
  • Ignoring an administratively dissolved status because the managers’ names still display.
